[K3PZN-List] W3AO Field Day Presentation by K3RA - Slight Change of Venue (April 6th)

I am glad he admits this is 'extreme' field day.

Its definitely 'heavy metal' -- lots of big yagi's, towers and big power thirsty
rigs (even when they are NOT transmitting) -- meaning gobs of generators and
burning some gallons of gas -- and lots of man-hours to set-up.

OK - its whatever 'turns you on.'  I guess I prefer the 'acoustic sound' for
field day.  I know of folk who will drive into park with only batteries, erect
some wire antennas (sometimes wire beams if they are near one of the coasts) and
use their 'less power thirsty rigs.'  (Example my K2 consumes about 70 mA on
receive vs. my Yaesu-monster which does over an amp -- ok I like this 'monster'
when the power is coming from BGE.)

Actually one op last year had a pretty 'acoustic FD sound.'  NY3A was the last
to show up -- he erected a couple masts very quickly, and he was ready to
operate.  (OK I don't know how much power a K3 uses versus the FT-'s ....).

I wonder if we could consider ONE 'Green Station' at our FD (amongst the heavy
metal set-ups that may emerge) ?  Perhaps a K2 on solar cells, with 'big' but
light weight antennas.  It would be nifty if we can use it on both CW and SSB,
and if we are networked it could be assigned to operate effectively where lower
transmit power will work.  Perhaps someone has some solar arrays ??

I am imagining that we have more HF spectrum available this year -- perhaps 4
phone, 3 CW, 1-2 digital and VHF/UHF?  Of course we need more operators .....
Can we aim to handily beat N3AO's set-up/tear down (and energy bill) by a huge
margin ??

Also maybe we can expand the inclusion of 'public service' demonstrations (and I
know ops at N3AO who would work with us again ....).

Spring fever - contest season nearly over (at least one PVRC rookie is done for
the year!) .... maybe other ideas are out there?

Venue (April 6th)

With regard to this presentation, the venue has changed slightly from the
Council Office Building (COB) cafeteria to the 6th Floor Conference Room.  Also,
take note of signs or ask the guard on the first floor across from the elevator
if additional directions are required.

The program will be "W3AO Extreme Field Day!" presented by Rol Anders, K3RA.

How many contest teams have averaged 425Q's/hour for 24 hours?!  That's the
typical performance of the W3AO FD team.  For 12 years, the call sign W3AO has
been in just about every Field Day log as the Potomac Valley Radio Club/Columbia
Amateur Radio Association (PVRC/CARA) team rises head and shoulders above every
other Field Day operation. The team holds 12 class scoring records and has the
record for the highest FD scores in history.  How do they do it?

For those who missed this presentation at the past PVRC holiday dinner and would
like to find out the answer to these questions and hear more, please join the
Montgomery Amateur Radio Club (MARC) for our Wed., April 6th meeting at 7:30p.m.
in the cafeteria of the Stella B. Werner Council Office Building (COB) at 100
Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD.  Free parking is available in the adjacent
garage.  See www.marcclub.org for a map of the location.
