Location: North side of Pikes Peak,
State: Colorado,
County: Teller,
Nearest City: Cascade,
Elevation: 13,000 Feet, 3962 Meters,
Trail Number: Pike National Forrest TR753 - This trail goes from the Devil's
Playground, down 3000 feet to the Crags.
The other way is down the (snow) chutes, 1500 feet by snow board.
There are no trees around here to snag my whip antenna.
i will be hiking to a peak north of the Devils Playground. i prefer this site
because there is no ignition noise, no tourists, no one with a
pacemaker around and no radio relay sites around to be interfered with.
SOTA/POTA Number: There is no number for this place, it is just a saddle ridge.
Weather: There was 2 inches of snow at 8000 feet 2 days ago.
You can see the summit temperature and wind chill at 14,115 ft.

Additional site info: http://www.dohc.com/devilsplayground/
Very high winds blow over the Devil's Playground.
The sign posted there says that people have seen lightning jumping from rock to
rock
during a thunder storm.
Equipment: PRC319 Military Backpack Radio, See
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/prc319/
i added a few extra /pm pictures on the "W0RW" QRZ.com site.
This is a fixed frequency radio, so i can't QSY when it is on my back.
You have to closely zero beat (QZB) me on CW because the receiver has a
narrow CW filter.
The radio weighs about 20 pounds with the battery pack. i am testing my spare
PRC319 and LiIon battery at altitude.
When the radio is properly sealed the rubber keyboard buttons will bulge out
like a balloon at this altitude.
Power: 50 W,
Antenna: 10 foot center loaded whip, using a quarter wave shorted stub
counterpoise to bleed off any static charges.
Power source: 28V, 6AH, LiIon battery.
Key: i use a highly modified Whiterook (now called a Greenrook) single lever
key. See the 'K9YA Telegraph', December 2008, for details.
Propagation: http://dx.qsl.net/propagation/
Propagation Beacons: Check WWV on 15 MHz for propagation to CO. I will be 5 'S'
units weaker
but i also have line of sight propagation for 100 miles in all directions.
Band Activity: PJ Pile ups.
Base Camp Intercom: 146.52.
Degree of Difficulty: If this was easy, we wouldn't do it. QRM, QRN, QSB, QSA1,
QRP, Contests, QLF, Saint Elmo's Fire, etc.
Hazards: Lightning, Sunburn, Frostbite, Caissons disease, Precipitation
Static, 1500 foot icy trail drop-offs; but no rattlesnakes above timber line.
This is the most hazardous Pedestrian Mobile operation site around these parts.
Special 'Devils Playground' QSL Card available.
