Hello all-
At the September CCARC meeting, photos were shown of various member's
stations. When I saw Stu's station, I instantly recognized a professional
installation, especially, his antenna installation and protection of
feedlines and rotor control cables entering his home. I emailed Stu the day
after the meeting and we exchanged emails concerning lightning protection.
It was quite apparent that Stu is a pro in the fields of EMC
(Electromagnetic Compatibility) and EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). I
proposed that he give a presentation to the club. See one paragraph of his
response below:
"I'd be happy to give a presentation at a meeting. I could talk on quite a
few topics. Lightning and surge protection is a good one if that's the
desire. I could also discuss virtually any and all aspects of RF
interference. On the amateur side, I've given presentations to other clubs
and at the Maryland State Radio Convention. Professionally, I've worked in
design and test of spacecraft and military systems for 25 years with another
5 years in broadcast engineering. I've been an independent EMI/EMC
consultant for the past 2 and one-half years working with military,
aerospace, telecom, and industrial clients."
I think everyone should be aware of the various sources of electrical surges
that can damage radio equipment and other devices connected to power lines
and outdoor antennas. Not all are willing to spend the money required for a
professional installation, but all should be at least aware of what events
can occur and what can be done to prevent damage from lightning and
power-line surges.
HAMFEST BALLOON LAUNCH
Stu was very involved in the Hamfest balloon launch. I wasn't directly
involved with the launch but I heard Stu on the repeater constantly giving
azimuth, altitude, and rate of ascent/descent info.
So, to get up to speed on these topics, come to the meeting Monday!
