FB. Not commuting to work here in MD is a good thing - as our traffic is beginning to approach LA levels of misery - and around DC they have exceeded it. Our county roads do not handle rush hour very well.
Off grid? I have met a few people in rural New England doing it. Here in Maryland the issue is summer humidity. I am originally from Ohio where AC is a luxury - here it is essential. While Westminster is not as humid as the lower lying coast - through many months of the summer most of us require AC at home (and in our cars). Some folk are beginning to use wind generators, but this requires adequate property set-backs to get the needed height. Yes do explore carefully - and I sense in the future gasoline taxes will be rising here.
Best wishes in your transition - a similar ionosphere will be here for you.

Hi Everyone (and Pat)
Thanks for the warm welcome - I'm def looking forward to being part of the
K3PNZ family when our relocation takes place. In the mean time...
1) FB on the Hamfest activities in Timonium. I actually attended it last
year and am very sorry to miss it this year. Looks like a great hamfest and
a place I can pick up some things I will need going forward with my antenna
plans. But I know that CCARC sponsors a Hamfest in (is it October?) so I
look forward to pitching in and attending it.
2) Even though I will be in MD I will be working for the Exploratorium
Museum of Science here in San Francisco. I do 3D modeling of prototype
exhibits, which is much less expensive than building prototypes in real
life. I do 99% of my work from home as it is, so changing coasts won't
affect that. I've also done projects for the European Space Agency and did
some consulting for the Smithsonian, so hopefully I can expand that too!
3) We are seriously considering going off-grid and using solar power at our
new home, so if there is anyone in CCARC who has done this please email me
off list - I would love to hear about your experiences. We plan on putting
in a backup emergency generator in either case once we have a feeling for
our peak load.
Well that's it for now - see you all in May or sooner!
Cheers,
Emily
