Well, I did it, found a decent rig to purchase yesterday. I looked this
morning on eham to see what everyone has been paying for the rig and what
the comments were, I think I got a good deal. I got a Kenwood TS-180s with
matching speaker and power supply and desk mic. Every review I've read on
this unit says it's a great and solid performer. It's simple for me to start
out with so that's a plus. I really was looking at an IC-706MKIIG at the
fest but when I saw the Kenwood complete for less than the Icom, I went for
it! It was part of the silent key estate sale that the fest was putting on.
Also got a good deal on a Bearcat BC895XLT trunking scanner, a 2 meter
vertical (homebrew) and a 5/8 wave antenna for the car plus some pl-259's
and insulators. I also got 100' of RG-213 and 100' of LMR-400. Going to use
the existing RG-213 for the HF and the LMR for the UHF/VHF later on...There
was some nice looking hard-line for sale out in the parking lot but it went
so quick, I didn't get a chance to look at it. Oh, did manage to pick up a
parts bin with some good capacitor and resistor values. Many of the tables
were open for price negotiations but some were unyielding on their
merchandise.
All in all, the fest was a success for me and it seemed to be an ok day for
the fest as well (was pretty packed). The tailgaters were snowed out but,
that was to be expected.
Managed to get my mast up last night but it was so dag-on windy, I couldn't
get the dipole up in the air. So I'm going to try again tonight and maybe
I'll have success?!? Then I can give Pete his analyzer back and start making
some contacts!!!!...
