From, Jeff Edmondson / W3JSE, Curt Gave You Good Advice ,But I Will Throw My 2 Cents In Also. Suggest Starting With a 40 Meter Inverted Vee.You Can Operate 40 / 20 / 15 Meters And Occasionally 28 Mhz . The Old Rule Of Thumb Is 468 Divided By Freq In Mhz. Thus A 40 Meter Inverted Vee Will Be Close With Each Leg Of The Vee Wire Being 32.5 Feet For An Actual Total Of 65 Feet. Assuming The Dipole Is Center Fed With A Feedline Coax To A 1:1 Balun At A 45 Degree Angle . Leave Your Wire A Little Longer And Adjust As Necessary. A Manufactured Balun For 1:1 Should Be Around $26.00 Give Or Take With A Male Connection To Couple With Your PL 259 Connector On Your Coax Feedline Or Perhaps Make Your Own Balun By Using 18-21 Feet Of Coax Wrapped Around A Cylindrical Form To Choke The Rf. This Would Give You A Nice 1/2 Wave Antenna. We Will Keep A Eye Out For You On A Good Used Hf Rig. Anthony 73 CUL GE SK KB3RJH DE W3JSE K
