[K3PZN-List] QRP To the Field Contest This Saturday (CCC/WPA)

FYI -- this Saturday is the annual QRP to the field contest -- a 'real' field day activity with obvious emphasis on light-enough-to-carry stations (battery, wire, small rigs ...).

Every year they have a theme -- this year is CCC / WPA (no I haven't determined a nearby site yet -- but i would like to operate for a few hours).

Yes there won't be a huge number of operators -- but enthusiasm should be high!

Ideas/interest appreciated -- I will alert the list if my field operation gets off the ground someplace.

Gang,
We got the QRPTTF rules, summary sheet, and other information up on the
website.  It is at:
http://www.zianet.com/qrp

The website also contains some photos and ideas for common WPA/CCC project
sites.

THIS INCLUDES CANADA, who had their own Work Relief Camps and other similar
projects in the 1930s.  A link to a list of some of their work relief camps
and other historical information on the Canadian side of the Great
Depression is included.

WPA/CCC PHOTOS: I got an interesting email today from the National New Deal
Preservation Society at http://www.newdeallegacy.org/

A Santa Fe area ham informed them of the WPA/CCC theme for QRPTTF.  I ended
up calling the president, who turns out lives in Santa Fe, NM.  They are
trying to figure out activities to bring attention to the disappearing New
Deal projects.  They have toyed with the idea of encouraging RVers, while on
the road, to visit and photograph the WPA buildings.  Though not a ham
herself, she thought the idea of hams operating from WPA/CCC sites was
"clever in bringing attention to this disappearing aspect of Americana."

They have lists of many of the remaining WPA buildings and art projects in
each state, but few photos.  They just don't have the resources to send out
people to snap photos.  Therefore, she asked us a favor ... if those of you
participating in QRPTTF from a WPA/CCC site to snap a couple of photos of
your site for their records.  She is interested in two photos: 1) one of the
overall building or project, and 2) a closeup showing the WPA marker.  This
is usually "WPA" stamped into the cement somewhere, or a brass plaque on WPA
public buildings.  You can send the photos to me and I will forward.  I will
ensure each photo gets proper credit to the photographer.  Some of these
photos may be printed in a book now in progress by the association.

This is good PR for hams and QRPers.  (Had I known this earlier, I would
have made WPA photos a bonus point!)

She did drop a MAJOR operating hint on me, well, for you.  She said famous
old Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway were built or improved primarily by WPA
and CCC crews.  That's only a few thousand miles of highways!  Hint.

Hope some of you are having fun finding your local WPA/CCC projects, and at
least one of them would make a nice QRPTTF site.

72, Paul NA5N
