We don't have any plans for JOTA, yet... but I would be available to operate our club station on Oct 18th or 19th for several hours so your group could participate. I have done radio merit badge in the past but given my current work schedule and other commitments I don't think I can personally commit to that right now. I hope things will be better this winter for me. I can certainly have some talking points and handouts available. I will bring this up at our next club meeting (a week from today) and get some more volunteers lined up for the event. If you could provide me with some desired times that would help me schedule to make sure I have the station manned and appropriate relief scheduled across the event. Members - a great opportunity to show our hobby to some young people, and also to get in some time operating at K3PZN. If scouts are indeed interested, it is a worthwhile idea to open our station and provide some educational resources. Obviously a short educational activity is needed before handing a mike to teenagers (even with the required control op). But trust me they are quick learners. Given their/our busy schedules this would have to be at the JOTA event. (We should perhaps provide a little info to scout leaders to honestly market what we will in JOTA). We should find out if other modes, like PSK31, are sufficiently used in JOTA, and prepare for those. In terms of follow-up after JOTA, we could consider how we can support any interested scouts in obtaining a radio merit badge -- and perhaps also a ham license. (In the old days, the radio merit badge requirements were closely aligned with the Novice license ... obviously things have changed). Very likely I can support this JOTA activity. Sustained winds are 70 mph. A Tropical Storm Wind Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service until 2300 hours Saturday. Impact on Maryland is projected to begin on Friday evening, with rain accumulations in Central Maryland expected to total 4 - 8 inches. Winds between 30-40 mph are expected. Most recent projections have shifted Tropical Storm Hanna?s ?Cone of Uncertainty? (i.e., ?Projected Path?) more easterly than previously indicated, requiring revisions to the potential impact initially forecast for Central Maryland. Governor Martin O?Malley has declared a State of Emergency for the entire state, as a proactive measure and at the recommendation of MEMA Director Richard Muth. Hurricane Ike has detensified into a Category 3 Hurricane. As of 23:00hrs, Sept. 4th, Hurricane Ike had maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (with stronger gusts). It is too early to project where, if at all, this storm may impact the U.S. Tropical Storm Josephine has maximum sustained winds near 50 mph. A slow weakening of the storm is expected to occur during the next couple of days. Again, attempts at this time to project where, if at all, Josephine may impact the U.S., would be premature. Watches/Warnings Tropical Storm Strength Wind Warning ? Until 2300 Hours Saturday Flash Flood Watch ? Sat AM-Sat PM ACTIONS / PREPARATIONS EOC Activation The Carroll County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has not been activated at this time. Emergency Management staff is closely monitoring the path and intensity of TS Hanna, Hurricane Ike, and TS Josephine. Should conditions warrant, the EOC will activate to an appropriate level, in anticipation of deteriorating weather conditions. Departments and agencies are urged to continue monitoring the status of these tropical weather systems through readily available mass media outlets, and to react to changing conditions, as appropriate. Emergency Mgmt. Staff is continuously monitoring the status of the active tropical weather systems that could potentially impact Central Maryland. As these systems evolve and conditions warrant, additional awareness bulletins will be issued. Staff is actively participating in regularly scheduled conference calls coordinated by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Generators Carroll County?s three (3) large-capacity, mobile generators have been serviced and made ready for immediate deployment, should the need arise. Shelters Carroll County Public Schools has been consulted regarding the potential need to utilize school facilities to shelter displaced residents, should conditions necessitate relocation/evacuation. Roads County Roads Operations crews have been working to assure bridges, culverts, pipes, and drainage structures are clear of debris. Damage Assessment Departments with members trained in damage assessment have been contacted in order to have their staff on standby duty until the storm has passed. MEMA The Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) first activated the State?s Emergency Operations Center at Noon, Saturday, August 30th. The State EOC has been raised to Level 3 Status and is continuously monitoring the status of TS Hanna, Hurricane Ike, and TS Josephine, closely. Accordingly, MEMA continues to coordinate Emergency Management and Public Safety preparations statewide. COUNTY STAFF WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE STATUS OF THE VARIOUS TROPICAL WEATHER SYSTEMS, PROVIDING ADDITIONAL UPDATES AS CHANGING CONDITIONS WARRANT. As you know I am in the "twilight" years of my life and one of the things I am determined to do (as my vitality lets me) is to downsize my belongings. Before moving to the CLV retirement center I had two residences and therefore had duplicate hand tools. If you are interested I will donate those I won't need anymore so the ham shack can have them permanently. If you let me know that you want them then I am willing to paint a color identifier on each of them so that when someone uses them they know where to return them and they won't get mixed up with members personal tools. Let me know by E-Mail if you want them and also what color you want for identification. Between now and the Christmas meeting I can probably find time to color code them and then turn them over to the club.I usually avoid green because they are too hard to see when you lay them in the grass. Tailgate Fest Results ? The event keeps growing. We had a good turnout and made some money for the club. The food vendor worked out fairly well, serving good food. There are some things we can do to improve the operation of the event. Some vendors were out at the site at 5:00 AM, but the majority of the volunteers showed up later in the morning. There was no appointed event leader to coordinate and direct ? hopefully we?ll have an ?incident commander? for the hamfest. Alternate locations are being considered for next years? event. 2. Hamfest ? Several options were discussed to encourage our vendors to return next year, and establish a better way to contact them. The ticket barrel needs a little maintenance to handle the sharp edges that have been developing on the wire screening. John K3KWO has volunteered to have a look. 3. Station Cleanup ? Gene KB3JHR is planning to have a station cleanup session sometime in October ? possibly the weekend of October 11-12 depending on the training schedule at the FTC. We could then have an auction at the club meeting on October 13. 4. Station Antenna Party ? Monday September 1, Labor Day, and weather permitting. Breakfast at 8:00, with the work starting around 9:30 at the FTC. The dipole antennas should take only a couple hours to get reconnected. 5. September Meeting topic ? In-Reply-To: <1221563987.48cf9653d26da@webmail.qis.net> Message-ID: <151163.84807.qm@web53910.mail.re2.yahoo.com> The following is for public release: The club has acquired a lot of equipment that can be described by various terms - surplus, vintage, stuff we once wished for .... At our regular October meeting on October 13 we plan to auction much of this stuff! More info may be available later, but included are vintage novice rigs, several VFOs, receivers, audio generators, RF generators, and some misc stuff from the PC age (this stuff sure goes obsolete fast!). So spread the word about this opportunity to own more electronics history and maybe even something useful. --------------------------- Please delete the following blog when releasing outside club: (gee you may wish to delete before reading !) Wow a lot of stuff here! Back in the 70's I wish I had an HG-10 VFO, and maybe it was in the early 90's I finally landed one for a few bucks. Gee there are 2 that are nicer looking than mine! And a few rigs to drive a VFO with ! I wonder if someone is brave enough to use an Eico VFO that is in the pile of stuff ?? The HG-10 is the real deal, nice and stable on 80 and 40 meters (and remember it multiplies to get to higher bands!). No I didn't see anything Exotic enough to thrill the QST Antique radio columnist -- unless it's hidden from view. Gee we have a corner on the market for HP audio oscillators! I think this box put HP on the map before they diversified, became the world's leading firm for test equipment, and then their board of directors 'stold' the HP name that is now on PC's (and not fine test equipment). We have both tube and solid state versions! We got a few RF signal generators (are any of them stable enough to inject a signal into a receiver with a crystal filter)? We got some stuff, weird test equipment, I have no idea what it is good for. (And to think I have 2 EE degrees.) PSSST - don't tell Andy that some of this stuff might be cool (or warm!) to have ... he thinks it's all junk -- so this will help keep the starting bids modest! Those of us with XYLs may need to convey this thing only cost a few bucks to get it thru the door! Now I wonder what WB8YYY will bid on ?? An extra VFO? A piece of test equipment to further warm the lab with my circa 1960 Tek Scope? Something that might be able to transmit RF (and maybe chirp away like my bird friends)? No I won't disclose my strategy! Gee remembering the XYL, if successful I should sneak something equal size and weight into the auction from my own stash! (Gee if there were a very light weight tribander I might be tempted but no all I see is that Isotron thing -- cool looking dummy load that leaks a little RF into the ether!) And if you don't want any of this stuff, maybe the laughter seeing what people buy might be better entertainment than found on TV these days! They are an electrical supply house. You may have to purchase a 10 foot length however. Chuck Coffee, KJ4GU Curt Milton wrote: > I am in need of 4-5 feet of this electrical conduit. I found that my local Home Depot only has EMT in this size. This material is specified to ground mount a vertical I seek to install, so being in the ground I suspect I really need to find the galvanized variety. Here's the scenario: Hurricane Murphy has just passed through the Maryland-DC area. Winds in excess of 90 MPH have knocked out power, telephone lines, and any antennas more than 20 feet above ground. Local repeaters are not operational. ARES members need to establish communications with each other, and relay reports of local (exercise) damage using NTS format messages. Most ARES team members can participate in the SET right from their home, if they wish to do so. Depending on your local terrain and the distance between individual ARES members, you may have to set up temporary antennas in order to communicate. You may need to use HF to bridge some of the distance. Of course emergency power sources will be required. Since I need to be monitoring the progress of the exercise in the MDC Section, I'm looking for someone who can facilitate the exercise here in Carroll. If you are interested, please let me know. 73; Steve, N3SB
