Bob
we thoroughly enjoyed your visit with us as well. maybe you missed the best part, when one of our club members used a high tech slingshot to launch a line over the barn to install the wire antenna we used as the station working morse code (aka CW).
here is a link to the spectrum chart i promised:
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/bands.html
to avoid information overload i didnt give you all this explanation there, but as amateurs we have a lot of slices of spectrum. the various bands are labeled by wavelength. they start with a band just above the AM radio band called 160 meters (requiring very long antennas and best used at night) thru lots of 'shortwave bands' that allow world-wide communication, and up thru VHF and UHF bands we use for local communication.
maybe you also saw some of us with little walkie-talkies (we call them handhelds) that allow us to communicate locally. as i explained we use 'repeaters' that are located on towers (generally county or agency provided) that greatly extend our range. our club has repeaters up in Westminster on the tower near the target store, and another down at Springfield Hospital.
we would love to have you visit a club meeting, at the same location where the voice operation was for field day, on each second monday of the month.
thanks again,
Curt
