I've mentioned this on the NVTN, but please let me put it on the email
lists so more people see it:
Severe Weather is possible Today through Sunday. Yes, on Field Day
Weekend. I'd like to invite everyone involved in Field Day activities
throughout the weekend to exercise caution and common sense when
erecting antennas and operating in adverse weather conditions.
Please be sure that you have a place to retreat, regardless of the type
of severe weather threat, and that you put your personal safety first.
Lightning safety is important, so use best practices and seek shelter
when storms approach.
Today: Upon discussion with NWS, even with a SLGT risk for today,
activation is not so likely. However isolated cells are certainly
possible in the soupy humidity already present. Even if it doesn't
storm, it is going to be hot, with high dewpoints, so make sure you and
your friends are staying hydrated out there!
Saturday has a greater probability for activation. The risk is expected
to be more to the western portions of the CWA. The ingredients for
damaging winds, hail, and possibly rotation are present. Please be sure
to secure your operating sites as best you can against high winds and
use best practices to protect yourselves and your gear from lightning.
DO have a place to retreat both from T-Storms and more serious events.
A 60+ mph wind is a 60+ mph wind, regardless of what caused it.
The Field Day 2008 NVTN could be an interesting exercise in rolling with
the punches. We'll know more on Saturday. ;)
Sunday has the risk more to the eastern portions of the CWA. The same
cautions apply. we'll know more on Saturday, and we'll be sure to get
more information about Sunday out over 147.300 and/or during the NVTN.
If we activate on Saturday, I will be at WX4LWX. I have 2 people who
have already volunteered to help out would like a couple of additional
people to share desk ops. Please contact either Tim or myself to volunteer.
Apart from finding a couple extra regular desk ops to pad out a
potential activation schedule, I would be thrilled if there were people
who were capable of operating as NCS, whether from their home stations
or from a Field Day site, we will be happy to have you. Chad, W1CAR, is
going to be acting as Net Manager, and will cheerfully accept the help.
Thank you again for your support of Skywarn,
Virginia Legowik, AK4EA
Amateur Radio Coordinator
(Feel free to forward to other lists.)
