Hi Jeff;

Thanks to you and to everyone else for the kind words of support!

The CARET Net script can be downloaded from this website:
http://www.qsl.net/caret/ Thanks for volunteering as net control!

You'll find a link to the CARET NET script about half-way down the page, in the
Carroll Amateur Radio Emergency Team files section. There's a bunch of other
good things to look at while you're there -- highly recommended reading! Phil
KE3FL maintains that website.

On the appointment - my biggest concern is how I'll ever keep up with our
Section Manager Jim WI3N. He seems to have an unlimited amount of both energy
and enthusiasm!!

Any and all ideas to improve the MDC Section ARES program are welcome. We should
soon have an email reflector established for MDC ARES discussions, which I hope
will be a good forum to exchange ARES ideas and hold discussions.

One thing I'm personally interested in is digital communications. Technology has
really been advancing in the area of sound-card based communications modes. Once
you have a sound card interface to an HF or VHF radio, you have everything you
need to take advantage of these new modes, and all you have to do to get those
capabilities is download some software. The latest software developments have
dramatically increased data throughput rates, added robust error detection and
correction, and made possible new techniques like digital voice and image
transmission. And it's just starting! There's much more to come!!

All these new modes are making ham radio a very fun, high-tech hobby. As ARES
members we have to figure out how we can make these new capabilities useful for
emergency communications. Before we can do that, we have to spend some time
playing with them - trying them out, having fun with them, and learning about
their unique advantages and disadvantages.
