To me you just can't have a real "Field" Day without the field. Setting
up stations and antennas is as much a part (probably more) of the event
as the operating. While there are certainly benefits to using the FTC,
the FTC station can be used for countless contests throughout the year.
If people are just looking to operate in a comfortable environment
without the setup hassles, then why not plan more club activities during
various contests? We can debate the potential need to build multiple HF
stations following a real disaster. However, we sent people down to New
Orleans to setup temporary offices. They were in relatively in-tact
areas and still found a lack of operating infrastructure. The basic
setup skills are good for people to learn and practice. Especially for
the new members and kids who like to help setup.
