Greetings All;

Attached below is a note from our SM Jim Cross, WI3N, urging everyone to send an
email note to Senator Haines requesting his support for SB80.

======

At this point in the life of SB80 (background:
n3ij.home.comcast.net/maryland.html), nothing affects the bill's survival
more than the e-mail you send to your senator on the committee. I'd
appreciate it if you would take a minute to paste the text below into an
e-mail and send it to larry.haines at senate.state.md.us with SB 80 in
the subject line. Please send me a copy at wi3n at arrl.org.

In the text of the sample message below, please delete the parens and
the material between them and insert a few sentences about why amateur
radio has been important to you.

       Ham radio may have been where your career got its start.

       Or maybe you gained a satisfying opportunity to serve your
community--explain how.

       Or you were able to teach yourself electronics; maybe you even invented
something, whether you patented it or not.

       Maybe you made strong friendships with hams in other countries and you
exchange visits with them.

       Maybe you were able to help others get started in ham radio with classes
or mentoring.

       Maybe you're new and haven't accumulated that kind of experience, but
would like to; describe your plans.

If you don't want to tell a personal story, just remove the "Insert your
personal story here" and send the message as is. One way or the other,
please send it this week! Note that some districts are represented by
important senators but don't have a lot of hams. Every message counts.
More is better, in this case. Please don't assume that someone else will
take care of this!

Thanks very much.

=====

Dear Sen. Larry Haines,

I am writing to ask you to support SB 80, the Amateur Radio bill sponsored
by Senators Klausmeier, Mooney and Stone. I reside at (insert your street
address and post office here).

The witnesses in the hearing on January 24 explained amateur radio's
importance to Maryland and the nation. In addition, amateur radio has
been very important to me personally.

(Insert a few sentences of your personal story here.)

It has been very difficult to recruit young people into amateur radio once
their parents find out that the activity must be concealed from the
neighbors. Passage of SB 80 will restore our visibility and legitimacy
and enable us to recruit the next generation of leaders. Newly-formed
HOAs will benefit from an established link with local emergency managers
next time the lights go out in a big storm.

I would appreciate your support for SB 80.

Sincerely,
