Since cateract surgury, if I didn't have my lighted magnifying glass from Office Depot - the one with the flourescent light around the lens - I wouldn't be able to do any solder work at all.  But with that I can even do SMT - as in the SoftRock Lites.  I don't have a small board holder, but sounds like it would be real helpful.  I'll bet Radio Shack no longer carries them.  If they do I'll pick one up.  For almost all my soldering work - KX1, SoftRocks, FireFly.  I use the Radio Shack grounded tip 15 watt soldering iron with their small diameter .015 silver bearing solder.  With that you can individually solder the legs of the Softrock SMT components.
