John and the group

nice post and good ideas. i am suspicious we can make
some reasonable adjustments. a group in NM (4
operators and 2 transmitters) had a phenomenal score
running QRP - but then I noticed they used some
state-of-the-art antennas operating E-class from a
home station.

on 20m we can make an effective antenna that is around
88 feet long and it will work well horizontal ... the
balloon idea might be worth considering for 80m, if
our objective is to put lots of west coast stations in
the log. but here in the east, it may not be worth
the effort since having a big signal east of the
mississippi may be more important.

i merely said fewer nice antennas would be better than
what we had since every mode would enjoy them, and
sharing them may not be so bad. you might even enjoy
trying a K2 on PSK31 to enjoy its nicer dynamic range!

the 20 foot screwdriver vertical the phone station
used was nicely effective ! next year let's work
smarter not harder. and we will 'work' to put more of
the 'fun' into the event that W3JJH has promoted.
maybe when/if John steps down as FD chairman he can be
the 'fun' captain.

speaking of antennas ... my shack does not have great
ones ... this fall i may continue my 80m vertical
experiments. if anyone has unwanted lightweight
pieces of aluminium around i could add some to the
remnants of a commercial multibander - i am
contemplating removing all of its traps and trying to
add a little stature to it. right now its merely a
perch for bluebirds.

i did make a QSO to VE2 with a TT1340 (same model rig
N3WM brought to FD. I tried calling ES1QN with it,
but there were others calling so i went QRO and got
him then on the first call .... i am enjoying DX on
40m CW with the 100w addition to my K2 ... i heard
that 6m had a nice opening last nite so give that band
a try.
