Artificial ionosphere .... maybe i don't "need" a
bigger antenna farm ... 

What's this expensive rig stuff?  I know DX can be
worked with a $25 rig (5 ICs and 1 garden variety
transistor and only three cheap xtals) ... 300 mW to
C6, ES, G, OK even T9 .... but i confess i generally
use a more expensive rig myself.  the economic
principle of "diminishing returns" kicks in at some
point but as an engineer i can appreciate the higher
end rigs with lots of dBs and DSP.  have fun and try
something new!
