Its a common courtesy to ask before doing something like this on a 
repeater. Many would consider it somewhat impolite to effectively take 
over a repeater for 8 hours without asking first. There are also 
practical considerations to think of - there might be a normaly 
scheduled net that would need to move, or the repeater might not be up 
to this level of use (one of the machines I work on lost its PA recently 
and is running on a mobile amp that is not up to heavy use and has 
reduced coverage), or the repeater could be scheduled for maintenance 
during that time, or some other event could be scheduled for the same 
day - you just don't know unless you ask.
