CARROLL COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB Minutes

The Carroll County Amateur Radio Club held the January meeting on the 
13th at the Fire Training Center.

President Beckman called the meeting to order at 1935. There were 27 
members and 2 guests present.

President Beckman N3SB made several remarks to the club, he thanked 
Clint W3ARS and Joe KB3DSR for sponsoring and organizing the Skywarn 
class on Tue the 7th; he thanked Joe N3YIM for chairing the Holiday 
Dinner; the next Board or Directors meeting will be Wednesday the 22d of 
Jan 03; he hopes to have Bill N3WM bring his testing equipment the 
February meeting to test members radios; an announcement that 
nominations for all offices of the club are open, and ask if there were 
any nominations, there was no response; Phil KE3FL asked for members who 
wish to remain on the ARES/RACES roster to let him know; members and 
guests introduced themselves to the gathering.

Tom Abernathy W3TOM was introduced as the guest speaker for the evening; 
Tom gave a spirited talk about his life as a Ham, and his involvement as 
the Section Manager for Maryland/DC section. He gave a very detailed 
insight to how Ham radio has responded to the many emergencies within 
our area, especially the Tornado the destroyed the downtown section of 
LaPlata last April. Upon conclusion of his talk President Beckman 
presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and a Tee shirt from 
one of this summers ARES/RACES support functions. Thank you Tom and you 
are welcome to come back anytime.

Keith KB3HHK sold the 50-50 chances for the evening, Bryan AA3XZ was the 
winner of the Mystery Brown Bag which contained a Multi-Meter. Funds 
raised were 40$.

The Secretary and Treasurer reports were read and approved.

Minutes of the Board�s December meeting were reviewed. (Copy available 
in radio room)

Committees;

Repeater � Steve N3SB reported the 450 machine is back on live, and 
asked the member to use it.

ARES/RACES � Tony KF3AK will participate in the RACES drill on Tuesday 
the 14th; Skywarn training was given on the 7th to approximately 70 
individuals, most were non-hams and several have applied to participate 
in the Sunday Classes at the club; be sure to sign up if you want to be 
part of ARES/RACES, see Phil KE3FL; Joe KB3DSR gave a report on the Sky 
Warn class and that he will try to organize a Winter Weather class later 
this year; President Beckman handed out certificates to members of the 
club that attended the Sky Warn class.

Publications � Joe N3YIM reported that the Oct-Dec issue will go to 
press this week with hope to have I mailed by next week and it will be 
placed on the web this week also.

Education and Training � Clint W3ARS reports that a new class will be 
starting early February, he already has five (5) individuals signed up 
and expects more; he is trying to get a special event station at Fort 
McHenry in September (11-12?), he has been in contact with the 
management who seem to think that would be a good idea, putting Fort 
McHenry on the map world wide; Bryan AA3XZ reported he has one 
individual that should be ready for the CW test very shortly.

Station - John AK3Z made the following motion, �I motion that the 
Station Committee�s budget be increased by $1700.� seconded by Keith 
KB3HHK, as there was not a quorum present the vote will be taken at the 
next meeting. John explained that the increase is for the purchase of 
needed equipment, computers, crystal filters, CW paddles, CW keys, boom 
sets and other filters, and that this increase is for the current budget 
only. John ask for feedback from members about the club going on a 
manufacture sponsored DXpedition, where would you like to go??

VHF/UHF contest � Mike N3VOP has volunteered to host the contest this 
weekend, 18-19th, he will be at the station early Saturday and will keep 
the station open until the end of the contest on Sunday. Contest will 
run from 2PM Saturday until 11PM on Sunday, anyone who wants to operate 
come and have fun, we have a 2 meter vertical and 2 meter beam that 
should make for some interesting contacts.

Upon having met the requirements for and being recommended for Life 
Membership by the Board of Directors, Bill N3WM was voted to Life 
Membership by the club members.

There being no further business President Beckman announced that radio 
tests would be available next meeting, bring your radios, and that there 
were shirts here for the taking, and the meeting adjourned at 2210.
