Thanks, Frank
Before you get to far, please be advised that since this truck is about 9
feet tall, a drive on trailer, like a Jartran, might not do the trick.
Also, the vehicle weighs about 4 tons...empty!
Your other points are well taken.
I guess I'm just a little over enthusiastic about this.....Okay, okay, a LOT
over enthusiastic.

It depends on how fast it loses water. As long as an almost full radiator is
maintained, there shouldn't be a problem. Also there is another trick. That
is to take off the radiator pressure cap. If the leak is such that it
manifest itself looking like steam, then with the pressure removed, it may
not leak at all.
Something to consider. Over the winter we want to make sure there is
antifreeze in the block and radiator so that whatever coolent remains, it
doesn't freeze.
I will look into borrowing a drive on trailer. Maybe we can rent one for a
couple of hours. As far as restoration goes, the chances of doing much into
winter is probably little unless it can be put in a garage or driven to one.
I would recomend that we try to replace the water pump ASAP AND associated
hoses. Hoses are cheap (both radio upper and lower and heater). If it is
drivable, then it can be driven to someone garage for specific repairs.
Shelter. If a temporary or permanent garage can't be found, the we can cover
it with one of those cheap blue/green plastic tarps. It will give it enough
protection for the winter and is easiliy put on or removed.
Since the EOC, FT ... appears now to be the Emergency Services complex, I
wonder if the control is shifting back to Buddy. The fire folks have taken
most all of the space and have there specialized training areas. Surely if
they would cooperate, there has to be some small space we can use. Is the
space where we store our equipment big enough for the truck, with or without
the stuff currently stored there? Also, most all firehouses have tons of
room, but again there is the cooperation that is required and unfortunately
I have seen little from the FD in CC. Another approach may be to talk to
some Church one of us belongs too. Often they have large parking lots.
AS I said before, I am a tinkerer. I have refurbed carbs, replace fuel pumps
and water pump, patched holes etc. But I'm not a mechanic and my health
prevents me from taking very much more. I will however be glad to do what I
can.
By the way, insurance is not needed until the vehicle is tagged. Title can
be transfered without insurance.
73, Frank
PS .. I could probably pull a 4 wheel car carrier with standard ball and 4
wire flat connector light plug.

After considerable discussions, I am very happy to report to you all that we
WILL be getting the 40 foot pneumatic mast with the radio truck.
I appreciate all of the feed back from Eric, Steve and Frank regarding the
refurbishing of the truck once it is delivered. All of you bring up many
valid points which require further discussion. Speaking of delivering the
truck, there are still one or two more things I need to do to it before it
can be delivered.
Due to the the nature of the shot water pump, I'm a little bit concerned
about driving the vehicle the 19 miles to the club station.....if that is
where we're going to house it. I do NOT want to risk blowing out the head
gasket should the engine overheat. Does anyone have access to or know of a
company that would donate a tow for the radio truck to the club? The
vehicle should be ready for delivery to the radio club by the middle to end
of next week.
I'm thinking that we might be able to build a temporary garage for the truck
out of PVC pipe, tarps, rope, stakes and cable ties for not too much money.
The $64,000 question is, WHERE?
Would anyone like to 'take point' on co-ordinating the repairs and
refurbishing process?
Does any think that the automotive vo-tech people would be interested in
assisting with this project? (Hmmm. We might even get a new ham or two out
of that deal.) If yes, then one of our club officers should contact them.
As always, you're thoughts, questions, comments, gripes, etc. are welcome.
