[K3PZN-List] Holiday dinner

Guys,

As others have stated already, this is a club dinner and we do talk
about club activities and radio. While I do not think an appearance by
Santa would be too hard to pull off for the children (I think we did it
last year), we are not obligated to expand our program to include other
subjects and activities not related to our club and radio.

If you take your wife to your company dinner, she will be bored. If you
take your wife to your Kiwanis or Lions Club or Elks or Knights of
Columbus, or whatever, she will be bored. My real estate office put on
a dinner as well, where everyone brought their wives and since they do
not know others and do not sell real estate, they were "bored". =20

So it is nothing new that anyone that is not involved or enthusiastic
about something will not find it exciting. It is my observation that
wives have been bored for years. Likewise, I am sure that going to one
of "her" events like a shower, fashion show, etc would not strike our
fancy either--unless we are "light in our loafers". But the point is
that our club dinner is a cheap evening out and promotes togetherness
among families and club members. It also takes the place of our regular
club meeting. I do hope that one day if I am fortunate enough to have a
wife to take to an event like this, she will not be too bored but will
be happy to be there just for me. =20

As far as the food goes, I will admit that I think the quality is
mediocre at best and not really that great. But it is more than
satisfactory and I am happy that the club makes it available to me for
$5.00. In this case, it is well worth it and a real "ham radio
bargain." But I do not think we will be able to find a place that offers
the combination of a buffet and a private room where we can discuss our
business and have some fun for the price we are paying. So it is ok
with me to continue having the dinner there, unless another club member
would like to take it upon themselves to find a new place with "better"
food, make the arrangements, book the room, and choose the menu. And do
it for the same or less money. As Joe and some of the board members
already know, it is a lot of work. It is also nearly impossible to make
everyone happy.

Anyway, I had a wonderful time. To me it was one of the best I have
attended since joining the club.

Just my general opinion and not directed to any specific
individuals.....and I would like to thank all who attended and who
worked so hard to make it a great show.

John, AK3Z

Joe

I would like to commend you on the fine job you did setting up the
dinner.

Yes, there are fancier places ... but if it cost significantly more,
the
club may not have been able to pick up part of the tab and we could lose
some attendance. Yes .. even for a few dollars we could lose attendance.
My
brother is in the electronics business and his rather infamous saying is
that "HAMS are cheap". I'll let that go at that.

On the other hand, what we got is about right for the price ... but not
a
bargain. The food was about as good as you can get in that type of
buffet
setting. My only complain was it looked like we might run out of ham
...
they may have refilled it, I don't know as I made one good pass. Very
often
when I go out to dine with friends (at an expensive restaurant), one or
more
in the group of six, doesn't think the food was up to par. Sometimes all
six. The points here are you can't please all the people all the time
and
generally when you dine out it ain't grandmas cooking.

Could Santa have showed up? Could there have been more for children?
Could
there have been entertainment? The answer of course is most probably
yes.
Could we entertain women that have no interest in radio ... I'll let
that
to each and every one of you to answer. You know your significant
others, I
don't. But if we kept it to awards only with no other comments or
business,
that could go part of the way.

Myself, my wife and four others put this affair on the first 3 or 4
years in
the early 1980's. Several others have done it in-between us and Joe.
But I
don't think until Joe, it was a one man show. It always had several
people
working as the holiday party. The flavor has also changed from a do it
yourself, to a catered affair. Frankly the most fun I had was at the
early
ones in which my wife and I were active. Not only did they have all that
folks talked about (Santa Claus, pi=F1ata, children's games,
entertainment,
and NO business except maybe an award etc.)

But the most lasting part of those early parties was the making of some
life
long friendships.

The dinner was fine with me, no real complaints. But if anyone wants
significant changes to an already good dinner, and the possibility of
making
more friends, not just meeting people, give Joe a break and take a cue
from
the way it used to be done (by sharing the workload and maybe going back
to
moms and grandmas good cooking).
