[K3PZN-List] You're getting old if you understand this one

Keith,
Actually, I was immersed in one of the ARRL antenna books at the time doing
some research and I was thinking about my early years when I was an avid
SWL'er. I used Slinkies in the attic of our rowhouse and experimented with
different lengths of dipole, end feed, and loops antennas. It's an old ham
trick to use Slinkies (the metal ones of course)to make dipoles in a limited
space. You could lengthen or shorten the thing by gathering up or letting
out the loops. I also had a Heathkit "Q Multipler". I still miss my old
Hallicrafters receivers... And people wonder why I still use a 22 year old
HF transceiver. I dare not get rid of it, I would miss it too much.
How are you coming with selecting a mobile rig? There are a few Icom 706's
and Yaesu FT-100's around that club members own and I'm sure that they would
give you have the 50 cent tour. (I have a '706 that you can see). Yaesu has
a new base/mobile/portable rig that looks interesting. I think it's the
FT-897(?). Works 160m to 70cm. It has optional built-in PS, battery and
antenna tuner.
If you are an ARRL member, you can get their equipment reviews off their
website. If not, let me know what you are interested in and I'll donwload
and e-mail them to you. If you do not get QST, I have this past year's
issues.
73,
Al, K3ZE
