Subject: Ideas and concerns for CCARC

Hi John,

At the April meeting, you invited members to provide ideas to help the club
and express concerns about the club. Here are my thoughts, in random order,
along those lines:

1. In the process of updating the bylaws, drop the Life Membership category.

There are many members now eligible for that distinction. Without a clear
set of criteria for selection, there will be many who become miffed if
passed over.

Granting the distinction to all who are eligible is not a solution, as that
declares longevity rather than honor of the award.

Further, the membership dues are becoming the primary source of income for
the club (after that disastrous hamfest last October).

2. Advertise the tailgate-fest and the hamfest.
The 2012 Mason-Dixon fest was moved to a new date and not advertised...a
recipe for disaster. There were no flyers. Information posted to the web
site was too little and too late...there was no vendor info, such as an
application or rate structure for table space.

3. The web site needs a webmaster.
This is a task that some of our members could do, if asked. Yes, it may
take some arm-twisting, but the return should be great.

4. Look to the membership for help with projects (such as webmaster or
hamfest organizer). I left the board several years ago because the board
did (and still does) all the club work with little involvement of the
general membership.

5. Bring back meaningful committees.
Get members involved! I recall that you mentioned at the March board
meeting that you were proposing to revise the bylaws to make board members
responsible for committees. That may not be an accurate replay of what you
said or intended. Either way, please make the committee system work again,
however you do it.

6. What does the club do for the member?
When was the last time that a member received anything for the dues paid?
The holiday party?...No, the price has actually gone up in the past two
years. A mailing?...I haven't received anything from the club in
double-digit years.

7. What does the club ask of its members?
Posting a request for help on the club reflector is perhaps a starting
point, but is really a cop-out. I know from personal experience that many
people will respond when asked directly. Does a member get a phone
call?...I probably made the last phone call to a member when I was treasurer
and that was likely five years ago.

Thanks for the opportunity to "vent".

BTW, I have reconnected with the CC emergency services office. Our first
meeting is scheduled before the May meeting. I should have a report to
offer at that meeting.

73,
Tony KF3AK
