It was never my intent to have my simple question to Bill and Pete become such a complicated issue.  I was merely looking to verify “yes” or “no” about having fried chicken since it is the first time in my memory of 14 years of club membership that it was not available. And from what I can remember, there was not one club member who did not enjoy the fried chicken in previous years;  whether at the VFW or even when we ate at Wilhelm’s (that was really spectacular).   I wanted an answer so that I could make my own plans and decide what was best for me.  Regardless of my opinions, I respect the decision of the Board and was not trying to stir the pot or be argumentative.  If that is the decision, then that is what it is.  No problem. I am not angry and I don’t feel slighted.  I can move on and enjoy other club activities and not worry about it.  It is really ok.

 

That being said, this was not about health at all but about my personal preference and choice.  My personal policy (for myself) is to eat healthy when I can.  But when I go to a party or event, I am not worried about what is healthy and what is not.  It is my time to enjoy what I like to eat.  That is why it is a celebration.   Although red meat is bad for your cholesterol and high in fats, ham is loaded with nitrates and carcinogens as all smoked meats are.  So one can pick their poison….

 

But as I wrote to Bill, we have some members who may not eat red meat.  Perhaps some of our Jewish members would not appreciate eating ham.  And our vegetarian members (Phil) are pretty much left out in the cold.  

 

Now to personalize this even more, I don’t really like ham and given a choice will be the last thing I will order.  So that leaves roast beef and salad for me to eat (I rarely crave sugar so I generally will eat more main course and little or no dessert).  I do remember that the roast beef last year was not the greatest.  But the chicken was done quite well.  And it will be my decision not to attend simply because I don’t feel there is enough variety for me to enjoy myself, as much as I will miss sharing the event with my friends.

 

I think the party is a wonderful benefit that the club offers every year, and a great time for us to be together.  But it does not mean that one should eat foods that they don’t enjoy, regardless of the cost.  My company provides all the coffee I care to drink, but I hate the coffee they provide.  So I bring my own.  And my own coffee does not cost any more than what they provide.  It is just my preference and it does not mean I am ungrateful or that I expect something “fancier”.

 

So I just want to apologize for misleading everyone and to thank everyone for reading my (really long) response.  I just wanted to decide for myself because what I am eating is more important (to me) than getting some gifts.  Again, this is just John’s own preference.  

 

I wish everyone a very nice Christmas and New Year and hope to continue to see all of you in 2012 (maybe even a contest in 2011).  I pray that I will have the means and the time to continue to enjoy my hobby and my friends.  Peace to all.  

 

Now to return the reflector to more important business and operating matters….

This may save us from cows jumping out of an airplane onto Westminster .... I suspect my neighbor's cows also would approve of a menu change.  

 

Perhaps the original list of choices is on your PC somewhere .... 

 

Strange this is about the most exciting thing on the reflector.  PVRC reflector has lamented slow updates to LOTW.  Meanwhile HF propagation is very good -- working some RTTY and CW while recovering from head cold.

I was not thinking fried chicken.  I remember baked chicken being served in the past.  The VFW may have not offered baked chicken this year.  I just don't recall.

I thought the whole point was to avoid the fried chicken to give healthier alternative.... I personally avoid the stuffed chicken due to shellfish and cheese but the whole point of 2 entree is so that if someone has such an issue there is an alternative so I don't care in this case. If we had this discussion weeks ago when the initial menu post came out I'd be happy to change but I'm not apt to do that now since we've published the sign up sheet and the menu 2x already.

Sorry if I started all this in jest!  

"Chicken has always been served' -- my we are set in our ways!  But still I sense the desire to appoint a 'club dietician' for these mostly older people that comprise us.  


Andy mentioned good reason for avoiding stuffed Chicken ... 

Could we get something baked rather than fried?

Pete,

We're not locked in on any meal selection yet..I too would vote for 
fried chicken...chicken and ham would be a good selection in my 
opinion..  We do need to get this firmed up soon however...
