Following is a document I had from when I worked on Table Sales in
1999. As you can see, as of 10/23/99 we had all but 3 tables
committed. We committed them and more by the day of the hamfest and
sold even more that morning. We had to use the dinning room tables
and when they were gone, we fixed some broken ones and made a few
more. Basicially only 3 people worked on these sales and you can see
how successful it was. But it took time, energy and the sales always
had to be in the fore front of our minds.
The efforts put in by Clint for Field day and by Keith for doing the
food reminds me of the efforts required for a successful hamfest.
Although most you know and for those that don't, I don't criticise
unless I paid my dues .... and I did as cofounder of the hamfest,
Treasurer of the hamfest for 8 or 9 years and co-chair for several.
And paid a few more when other co-chairs quit before the finish
line. Plus I made signs, wrote letters, designed, had printed, and
passed out the flyers for years along with countless other tasks
etc. I'm not trying to blow my own horn, but show that I am
qualified to comment.
No one person should ever have to put out that amount of effort. The
hamfest has to be a coordinated effort, with planning and work by
many individuals.
Hamfests have fallen off some, BUT all that means is you have to
advertise more, become more efficient in our expenditures and beat
the bushes harder for table sales etc. Joe writing to the various
companies for prizes etc. is a good example of beating the bushes.
Three people handing out flyers at Fredrick is shameful. The fact
that a step by step list was put together for the next chairperson
and lost is also shameful to say the least. We talked about member
participation etc. but we tend to over load those that weok and
sometimes diminish their efforts. Why do you think some active
members drop out of sight. Why is the 1999 Hamfest Chairman no
longer closely involved?
Some members said they took flyers to Timonium, but only ones I saw
on the tables were when I replemished them ... twice. Either no one
else kept the tables stocked or we didn't plan the amount very well.
Folks ... if we have a bad hamfest ... be sure to put the blame in
the right place. ON US. And please don't someone write back and ASK
me what we should be doing or should have done. I trained several
people over the years and helped Wayne put together the Hamfest TO
Do List. FIND IT! Enhance IT. Update it. Use it.
I am not criticising any one personnaly, I just think the Club ought
to put as much time into planing for the hamfest as it does trying
to find ways to spend the money.
Maybe the time spent commenting on the generator problem would have
been better spent on figuring how to raise the money or talking
about finding a mechinist who could mount a starter on it. Yes ..
someone with engine experience could take a auto flywheel and
matching starter, weld it on the crank housing and mount the starter.
