I do the same, but, I first wrap a couple turns of electrical tape inside out (smooth side on the connector), the, a couple wraps of electrical tape the “right” way (Sticky side sticking to the connector), and the wrap it with that nasty stuff- makes it much easier to get off later, but, is still waterproof.  I only end up with a very small bit of the sticky stuff on the coax where the first/last wrap overlap the electrical tape and it’s the coax. One the last J-Pole I make, I did the inside out electrical tape/ right side out electrical tape / coax seal on the PL-250 to SO-259 connection and across the shorting stub to where it’s soldered to the copper pipe.

I’ve made J-Poles 2 ways- one where you solder the SO-259 (Chaise Mount) to the short stub, and a piece of 12 ga wire (I use scrap Romex I have laying around) soldered to the longer stub- and then wrapped as above. I’ve also built one where I didn’t use an SO-259, and just used a pigtail made from coax- soldered the core to long stub and the shield to the short stub.

Mike

I use that god awful stretchy tape that seals itself.
Yes it is just copper wire soldered to the short pipe and center pin

I’ve been planning to make one of these, I found some old copper pipe in my garage a while back. Currently I only have a 2meter dipole I made on my roof, but wanted to make a 2M/70cm j-pole. Did you do any weather proofing to the connector, and is that just some copper wire soldered to the So239 chassis mount in the center?

Sent from my iPhone. Any mistakes made is because Siri made me do it.

Jimmy,

Unless I already gave it away I may have one of these somewhere in the basement.  If I find it you can have it.  Let me know and I’ll go digging.  Would then just have to figure out getting it to you (I work Thursday nights and cant make the meeting).
