I am very interested in the skywarn training. I would also like to know more with regard to being a Net Control Station before I could commit to being one as I'm not sure I'm adequately set up for that at this time.

Thanks,

Good morning all. Severe weather season is right around the corner. In preparation, we are working to bring the Skywarn program back to life. With the loss of the "350" repeater, Southern MD was left without coverage, so CARA voted use it's linked system to fill that gap.

In the very near future, we will try to coordinate a Skywarn Basics class for spotters. If you've never taken the class, I would strongly encourage it. A lot of the information applies to every day weather awareness. We plan to work with Calvert Co. Dept of Emergency Preparedness to involve the citizenship as well. If you are interested, let me or Shawn know so we can maintain a list.

We will also  need operators to function as net control stations during times of severe weather to gather and relay spotter reports to NWS in VA.

There is some training involved which is done through Zoom session(s)to ensure all are familiar with what NWS expects. When we have enough folks willing to take on NCS duties, a session can be scheduled.

If you would be willing to function as a NCS, please email Jerry Stuckle at [email protected]. Jerry is the Amateur Radio Coordinator for the Nat'l Capitol Skywarn Support Group.

We believe this is a good way for our group and CARA to be involved in the "service side" of amateur radio. Who knows... if we get a good turn out from the citizens, we may even be able draw more interest in the amateur radio community.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks.
