Calvert Amateurs support Auxiliary Communication at three National Night Out locations.

Calvert County: August 4th 2026. Several members of the Calvert Amateur Radio Association (CARA) demonstrated their AUXCOMM ( auxiliary communication) capabilities at three separate National Night Out locations. CARA members, licensed amateur ham radio operators, set up working on the air operating stations at community hosted events located in Chesapeake Beach, Huntingtown and Broomes Island. Stations included portable, battery operated, radio equipment designed to support local, regional and world wide communications.

Radio contacts were made on the local K3CAL repeater system, covering all of Calvert County. Several contacts were made throughout the county, including contacts with other stations located in Mechanicsville MD, Laurel MD, and the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. .

CARA members also demonstrated the remote control capabilities of the amateur radio gear located at Calvert County Emergency Operation Centers. The method, known to amateurs as crossband repeat, connects low powered local radios to more powerful and much higher transmitters, increasing the distance signals travel. Sometimes by hundreds of miles. Using the crossband repeat method, radio operators made several contacts throughout the regional area surrounding Calvert County.

Community residents at National Night Out, also saw other radio communication equipment used to demonstrate the ability to establish world wide communication, as well as the ability to send e-mail over radio from anywhere in the world. Similar equipment is often used in response to severe weather reporting, natural disasters, or other times of local community needs.
