| "In these days of the COVID pandemic, I thought it might be interesting to reflect back on disease and its treatment. Henry Jerningham lived in Bushwood, Maryland, and offered smallpox inoculations. This was the intentional infection with the actual smallpox virus. Apparently, there are two varieties of smallpox, variola major and variola minor, with one far deadlier than the other. The inoculation involved introducing pus from a smallpox sore into a scarified area. Dr. Jerningham then monitored the patients as they developed a hopefully minor case of smallpox which provided lifetime immunity to the virus. This type of inoculation was popularized in America by Cotton Mather during a smallpox epidemic in Massachusetts in the 1720s. He learned about the process from his enslaved West African man named Onesimus. While Mather promoted it, it was considered very controversial in the 1720s in Boston – Mather actually received death threats and the disdain of the medical community. It slowly gathered acceptance over the course of the 18th century. In the 19th century, Edward Jenner observed that milkmaids did not get smallpox having been infected with a far less lethal disease called cowpox. Jenner introduced inoculation with cowpox, also known as vaccinae virus (from the Latin vacca for cow). Our term vaccine comes from this cowpox virus. Dr. Jerningham provided a wide range of medical procedures. When looking at his probate inventory from 1774, I noticed a rather unusual device. Apparently, Dr. Jerningham was providing electro-convulsive treatment for his patients. Essentially the apparatus was a galvanic generator that would discharge direct current. A testimonial appears in the Maryland Gazette in 1761 which claims the treatment cured a case of deafness. The same treatment was applied to a range of ailments. Jerningham is an amazing character, attempting to found a Catholic refuge in Louisiana and giving unusually specific directions for the disposition of his body after his death, including dissection and the use of lots of quicklime." |
