I tried to add Peter Hughes to the list today. I'm not sure if I was successful. But am carbon copying him your message. Thanks for the research, Jim.
Peter Hughes, let me know if you got this twice or more times. I'd like to know if I was able to add you to the list.

Subject: [K3CAL] Fwd: Kenwood RCD710 aprs control head
> I dont know if Peter N3PH is on the reflector emails for CARA or Auxcomm, so If anyone knows his email or speaks to him please pass this along.
> During last Saturdays SET lunch discussion, I told N3PH that a nice attachment for his Kenwood V71 radio, would be the addition of the RC D710 control head. Thus he could swap out with the V71 and have a unit with TNC built in for the same price as a Kantronics outboard TNC (about $199.). Well as I have been looking for the head unit I found it had been discontinued by Kenwood. So sorry to raise the hope!
> About the only place now to find one of these jewels is used sale, hamlfest, swap etc. I guess the word got out on adapting this control head to many different radios of various manufactures, including HTs. This would require some research, and a kenwood adaptor unit to get the 10 vdc for the head and separate speaker and microphone....a little playing and electronics knowledge....oh wait, we are Hams, thats what we do! Haha. The second best bet is the External TNC and the kantronics entry level model is the easiest to configure, plus it will do a few extra things down the road (maybe), but the kenwood did standard 1200 baud and 9600 baud very well if you can find the correct gateway or someone else using 9600 on P2P packet. Since you will be looking at the hamfests for stuff sometimes there are great buys on a TNC in the used market, just make sure it has Kiss capable firmware.
