At our August meeting on the 2nd, we discussed several events that members plan to attend.
First off is National Night Out which is tomorrow night, Tuesday Aug 7th.
Currently, 27 Calvert County communities will participate in the August 7th event. They include: Bayside Forest, Breezy Point, Calvert Collaborative for Children & Youth (Harriet Brown Community Center), Calvert Pines Senior Center, Carroll Western Church, Chesapeake Ranch Estates, College Station, Dares Beach, East John Youth Center, Long Beach/Calvert Beach, Lower Marlboro, Oakland Hall, Patuxent Palisades/Shores of Calvert, Prince Frederick Village, Prince Frederick Seniors, Calvertowne Town Homes, Queensberry, Symphony Woods, The Meadows, Timberneck, Town of North Beach, Victoria Estates, Western Shores, White Sands and Yardley Hills.
There is an event close to you. Attend. Wear your club shirt and/or vest. Carry a handheld. Talk up the club and find others who want to become amateur radio operators. This is a good place to mingle and let the community know who we are and what we do. I will be at the Chesapeake Ranch Estates event.
The 2018 MDC QSO Party will be held on August 11, 2018. This year the event will be a one day event, 8/11/18 1600 UTC - 8/12/18 0400 UTC. CARA will participate as a club station from Mt Hope. Operations start at noon on Saturday Aug 11 and will continue until the Mt Hope Community Center closes at 2200. Plan to arrive at 1130 to get stations powered up and connected. Come and work a few hours or the whole event. Only 3 MDC clubs worked this event last year. Let's show Anne Arundel Radio Club some support and have some fun this Saturday.
In October, Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD) at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons has used us for parade coordination communications in the past. I expect we will be requested again this year. And we have had an info booth in some years in the past also. Put October 6th and especially Oct 7th (parade day) on your calendars. We only had 2 volunteers last year and really need at least 4 to do this right. 3 people with handhelds and 2 people as scribes and runners would really make this work well.
We discussed having an event in support of the Maryland Dove, Maryland's tallship, at St Mary's City again this fall. Date TBD. Last year we did it in conjunction with Historic Museum Ships Weekend. The Dove is not an historic ship but a replica of one of the first ships to bring colonists to Maryland in 1637. They are needing publicity to raise awareness for their need to build a new ship. The current one is 40 years old and is needing either major work or replacement. This event will be a special event station and will be a low key multiband, multimode operation from a sheltered location overlooking the river and the Maryland Dove.
Don't forget to sign in to the CARA Net at 1930 on Monday nights on 146.985 Tone 156.7
The next CARA board meeting will be on Aug 28th. All members are invited to attend.
