All,
I tripped upon this web site yesterday. If you like maps, this one is pretty interesting. You can select a county in Maryland and view the terrain elevation in a color-coded overlay. Makes it easy to see at a glance what's high and what's low.
The trick to using this site is to get familiar with the LiDAR Opacity slider. If you slide it to the left, the LiDAR elevation info will become more invisible, exposing the base map below.
http://imap.maryland.gov/Pages/lidar-topography-viewer.aspx
My suggestions for use:
1. In the County Shaded Relief pull-down, select Calvert
2. For the Base map, select Open Street/Map
3. Slide the LiDAR Opacity slider all the way to the left to expose the base street map
4. Zoom in to your area of interest using the street map for reference
5. Slide the LiDAR Opacity slider to the right to see the color coded terrain elevation.
Some notes:
The elevation color code bar on the lower left isn't correct, at least for Calvert. The lowest spots are blue (the Bay) and pale green to green, The highest spots are a light gray.
If you position tour cursor and click once, the elevation at that spot will be displayed in meters. Multiply by 3.28 to get feet.
The elevation data used for these maps was collected using airborne or satellite laser radar (LiDAR). The elevation is true ground height, not treetops or buildings (they process that stuff out).
Enjoy
