Tom,
The Johnson matchbox is there just in case we have an antenna that is difficult to match on some band. It has a larger impedance matching range than most built-in tuners.

Subject: Re: [K3CAL] Field Day Equipment (Results of Field Day Meeting held 5-19-2015)
Good Evening,
A few questions, if I may.
1. Is there any additional gear/accessories that would be helpful for
Field Day?
2. Did the question related to power supplies ever get resolved?
From the spreadsheet at the enclosed URL
3. Did I commit to bringing a computer? If so, how should it be
configured? (I remember discussing a printer, but not a computer.
Please let me know, if my mind has checked out again.)
4. The TS-440S has a built-in auto-tuner, so can I assume that the
Johnson Matchbox Tuner is being used as a balun as much as a tuner?
Would external Baluns be of value? (Also, the MFJ tuner has balanced
output as well as unbalanced (coax) output.)
5. I have the Kenwood IF-232 interface for the Kenwood TS-440S. Is
there any interest in having it for Field Day along with the TS-440S?
6. For completeness, I committed to bring a 12 volt 30 amp power
supply and a 12 volt 40 amp power supply. (These can drive the TS-680
and TS-440S stations including ancillary equipment.)
7. Do we have any idea what supplies will be needed for grounding
(grounding rods, heavy gauge cable for ground lines, etc)?
Thank you in advance for the clarifications.
73s,
