To All,

The Email below is from the MARCOPRS MARATHON MEDICAL GROUP of which I am a
part of for the upcoming marathon.

You have to go the link at _www.w4ava.org_ (http://www.w4ava.org/) to see
a great video on making a "Tiger Tail" for your handheld. You have to
scroll down at the site to see the "You Tube" video.

I was surprised to see what the addition to a handheld showed on the
Spectrum Analyzer as shown in the video.

Aloha,
Les

Subj: How to improve hand held radio performance

Hi
David Jordan, WA3GIN, made the following recommendation to improve the
performance of hand held radios.
Many thanks to David for providing this information..
WD5DBC
>We've recommended to Howard Cunningham that the volunteers for race
>route duty be instructed to incorporate radio operator 'best
>practices', i.e. install 'tiger' tail radials on hand-helds radios,
>when deployed locate away from commercial garage door openers (which
>cause RFI on 2m) or other local RFI (Metro buses), hold hand-held
>radios-do not belt-clip radios, use 1/4 wave whips-not rubber duck
>antennas, etc.
>
>We provided a very informative hand-held radio user training video for
>the MCM radio operators. The video can be found on the W4AVA home page
>_www.w4ava.org_ (http://www.w4ava.org/) I hope this years training
meeting will include viewing
>this video or at least make it known to the volunteers that they can
>view the video at _www.W4AVA.org_ (http://www.w4ava.org/) .
>
>Proper use of the hand-held radio can improve the receive and transmit
>signals significantly ex: a belt-clip 5 watt radio with rubber duck has
>an ERP of 50 mw as compared to a hand-held with tiger tail and 1/4 wave
>whip w/ERP of 4.5-5 watts. Do the math that is a massive difference in
>performance, almost 16db.
>
>You have three repeaters available for MCM use, the 146.625, 447.625
>and 448.625 all using PL107.2. If you prefer we can link the
>146.625 with the 447.625 providing access via both VHF and UHF bands.
>Your call.
>
>You may be aware that the W4AVA repeater system is partner of a larger
>wide area network system covering over 10,000 sq. miles.
>During the MCM the W4AVA repeater will not be linked and will operate
>stand-alone, dedicated to the 2014 MCM.
>
>Have a Great race,
