I'd like to help on both days.  At this time, I still have a court appearance scheduled on Monday but it is requested to move to the fall.  So, Wednesday for sure and probably Monday, too. My radio does have an s meter and it worked for our previous fox hunt.  It will be available for Cub Scout use.

The local Cub Scouts are sponsoring a day camp at Kings Landing park from June 23rd to June 27th.    We would like to set up an amateur radio tent and do some fox hunting to serve as the "engineering" activity for the scouts. Looking for volunteers to help out.  I need volunteers to support the attached schedule for Monday, June 23rd and Wednesday, June 25th.  We need at least two, and optimally three, volunteers to be present at all the sessions shown on the Monday and Wednesday schedule.   If we can get enough volunteers, we'll add Tuesday and Thursday to the mix as well.  


The current plan is to have the older kids (Webelos and Bears) learn about basic radio location techniques and then try to find some hidden transmitters located around the park. The younger kids (Wolf and Tiger) would learn about radio and perhaps make a few contacts from a HF station set up in the tent.


Each group (pack) consists of a maximum of 15 scouts who will have 50 minutes for the activity.  The plan is to break them up into three groups for the fox hunt, using at least two transmitters hidden in the park set on different frequencies.   The organizers are going to pay for materials so we (ahead of the event) can make four or five tape measure antennas (one or two as spares).    Radios are still TBD, but thinking of HT's with S-meters.  If you are willing to loan a HT (with s-meter) that you're willing to have the equivalent of MIL-STD-810F shake, shock and vibration testing done on by a Cub Scout, let me know.  Note:  Web search seems to indicate that those inexpensive Bao Feng HT's have an s-meter but it really doesn't function as a proportional signal level indicator and would not work for fox hunting.


If we can get enough volunteers, we'll add Tuesday and Thursday,  with the activity to be learning about radio and making contacts using the station we set up in the tent.  If you look at the schedule, each pack comes through the tent twice between Monday and Thursday.


Please let me know ASAP if you can help out during the week of June 23rd and what days & time periods you can cover.  It's a great opportunity to introduce our young folks to the magic of radio.


Yes, I know this is the week before Field Day, but look at it as a way to acclimatize to the great outdoors prior to Field Day.
