Hey everyone,
So Bob (N3PPH) switched our repeater to auto this morning as agreed to at
last night's meeting.
Today I caught a snippet of a QSO taking place on the digital side on my
Alinco DJ-V57 HT.
Several people asked last night what the digital QSO would sound like for
those of us using "legacy" FM radios, so I snagged a 30 second recording of
the sound and have attached it below.
The audio starts out with the digital QSO in progress. At 6 seconds in,
you will hear the sound change to normal white noise. Then at 11 seconds
you'll hear a beep and the digital sound again. At 21 seconds it goes back
to white noise and the beep and digital audio returns at 25 seconds.
Of course, as stated before, if you have the tone squelch set properly on
your radio, you won't hear any of that. However the receive light and/or
busy notification should be active on your radio, depending on model and
features.
Also, a third station jumped in at one point to comment on how annoying the
noise was (he didn't have his tone squelch enabled) and one of the stations
involved in the digital QSO immediately responded to him.
I believe he was able to hear the FM transmission because he had his
digital radio set to automatically receive both types of signals. This
addresses another concern brought up last night, on whether or not a
station transmitting in normal FM would be able to break into a digital QSO
in case of an emergency. The answer appears to be yes, as long as the
stations involved in the digital QSO have their radios configured properly.
Hope this clears up some questions.
Regards,
David Olenjack
