Need more information. Do you have a picture?
Is the yard/ground slopping away from the foundation/post? Do you have
gutters on the house and are they working, i.e., rain water runs down the
down spout? Is the gutter pan positioned so that water runs away from the
foundation/post? Was the rotten post sitting on the ground or on concrete?
If the post was not pressure treated then do not replace with pressure
treated lumber.. If post was sitting on the ground then you may need to
pour concrete footer so that the footer is 2 or 3 inches above the ground.
The footer needs to go below the freeze line which is close to 36 inches in
CALV. Cannot remember exactly number of inches how much freeze line is here
but that is easy to find out before you dig hole. I add a few inches to
make sure it well below the freeze line in case we ever have a major freeze
here.
If you live near Sneade's Hardware Store in Owings then stop in store this
Wednesday or Friday evenings. Or all day this Sunday, 4/6, from 0900-1500
hours so I can show you what you need purchase and what to do. I work in
the plumbing/electrical/hardware department.
