I have a FT-857D and a FT-817ND,   all the same radio family and 
share most of the same boards(I believe)...
DSP is good, menus a tad involved, but good documentation from 
Yaesu.   The receive on both would be improved with the SSB filter 
which I don't have, but as received from manufacturer, I think it 
would be a great choice since covers all bands and all modes.... and 
has the option of battery packs so could be used 
portable....  Batteries on FT-817ND works great, but capacity limits 
it's use... not a problem but don't expect batteries to hold up more 
than a few hours.   Last I saw HRO in Woodbridge, VA had one 
(FT-897D)set up so he could go check it out... hope this
