If anyone would like to listen to the fire department communications in the
tornado area go to Oklahoma City Fire Live Audio Feed go to >
http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/318/web . There are some
communications that are horrific so beware.
We often talk about Amateur Radio being a first line of communications
between the County and us. This is NOT true. Your radio is to help your
neighbors, your family and you first. If we have hams in all the
communities which is most likely in Calvert County then we help ourselves
and others first. When there is no power and no phone service the first
thing that happens is we check on our neighbors. It could be hours or days
before the Government agencies can get into damaged areas to assist people.
We need to encourage our family, friends and neighbors to use FRS or GMRS
radios. We need get these same radios for ourselves so we can communicate
messages from non-hams out of affective area.
Hams are the responders before the first responders show up.
Remember the Derecho last year? The short high winds damaging storm that
happen in June 2012. It took down the 9-1-1 communication system in
Alexandria, VA. So do not think an emergency communication cannot happen
here. Remember Drum Point Community was without communications for days two
years ago. No phone, no cable service for SIX DAYS. Ask John/KB3SXC next
time you see him at CARA Meeting. I am certain he will remind you the
frustration of the Drum Point people during that time period.
One lesson learned from the LaPlata Tornado is the number of flat tires
causes from roofing nails. It is important to stay in shelter-in-place
unless directed otherwise. There are live electric wires on the ground,
need to protect family & property, gas leaks and etc., hence, is very wise
to stay where you are so you do not add to the work of police and rescue
personnel.
Many people refuse to prepare for disasters. It is a normal human condition
to say it will 'never happen' to me. So people delay getting needed items
or training till there is paragon shift in their life such as tornado, snow
storm or etc. As hams, the BEST training is participating in Public Service
Events. PS events are so much like an actual communication disaster than
there is no better way to prepare oneself.
CALV ARES next Public Service Event is to assist PGRE on Saturday & Sunday,
June 8 & 9, for the MS Cycle Event.
