Peter,

Sorry I missed you the other day, by the time I got your message
it was too late in the evening to make a contact with you (gave a quick call
on ten meters around 8:30 pm.

Glad to hear you got your home QTH up and running. We can try to make some
contacts we you get back from your Bay trip. If you want to set up a 40
meter time to try a contact from your boat I might be able to accommodate
you, give me a time and date. (We may be too close to make that happen
unless you are using NVIS antenna and I set up my backpacker) I want to set
up NVIS 40 and 80 Meter at my house if I can find a 60 X 60 patch of ground.
Anyway we can try; my antenna is low angle, thus set up to go distance and
not local.

We went up to the EOC today and got one radio up and running (used the hard
line coax) on the radio sitting on the file cabinet. We were able to do the
remote mike set up from the EOC and contacted the repeater 146.985 CARA and
also after correcting the pl tone contacted the 147.105 Anna Arundel
Repeater AARC (W3VPR) pl tone was too old to work out of the box, their tone
changed a couple of years ago. Also made a simplex call. And hand pa
communications with the radio to the EOC room with the auxiliary mic and
control box connected. The other radio (under the white box) was the radio
they used with the computer and dot matrix printer to do packet
communications with a packet 232 controller (packet is like old internet
email, actually bulletin board messaging system from the early computer
days) This radio was not connected to an antenna and the antenna was
terminated in a resister. We checked the radio and it does work, but we left
it off and terminated to the resister, in case someone turns it on and keys
the mike. We will make up our findings and give to EOC. Actually we know the
two other hard lines are attached to other antennas but one was resonant at
around 151 mhz and the other around 158 mhz. (maybe old Sherriff's radio
sets when they were there. No one knows??). I was able to sign up for NIMS
classes on the 19th 20th and 21st. with Carl, he also mentioned that they
are looking for Ham operators in the Ranch Club and want to set up a CERTS
EOC using Drum Point as a model. There are many Hams and CBer's in the Ranch
Club; Charley AB3LE should be able to round up a few for the next County
meeting.

Jim Tetlow

Jim,

Just wanted you to know that I have my Kenwood up and running now at
home and had a QSO fellow in Georgia with a good reading. I put the dipole
center feed up between two big trees right over the house. Thanks for your
help.

Next I have get some lightning arresters in at the KB3TGF (DPPOA base
station). I've ordered them from HRO.

I will be off the net for a couple of days while I'm out on the Bay. I may
be able to work from my boat's SSB, certainly around the 40 meters but that
is not the range we are looking for.

Peter, I'm sure you will get it down shortly. I can come down this week
(pick a day) and we can go over a few things. We can also set up a little
mini chat on 10, 15 and 20 meters during the next couple of weeks to shake
out any bugs. There are enough of us free during the week to schedule
something like this during the day, and I have found that others that hear
us will joint in the QSO. Be thinking also were you want to string the G5RV
at your home so we can set up an antenna party and get your new Kenwood TS
2000 fired up! Do you have a UHF antenna for your Home?

Also remember we are doing some weekly raw chewing on the repeater during
the weekday mornings usually starting 6:30 am (actually closer to 7 am
lately) until around 9am.

Join in if you get a chance. Various topics are discussed from detailed
Rocket Science (launching squirrels into the ionosphere) to everyday chat;
sometimes we actually talk about Ham Radio subjects. Dave W3PQS started this
and it has become very popular, it has bee named by some as the CARA Coffee
Net. We have Normal Daily Support from Dave, Bob N3PPH, Brian KB3URZ and
Frank KB9RAL. Frequent support from Brian KB3WFV, Dick W3RBR, Ron WA4PRR and
Don KR3A. Hopefully a new member of the coffee group Ed KB3WLG. And it can
always give one some entertainment for those that choose to listen or like
John,N3EDD whom needed traffic report to find a way out of Calvert County
during the recent floods in the County Exit Roadways. We may even find it
becoming a permanent part of our mornings as it becomes pretty additive like
the coffee. (May become the directed morning CARA Club Net, with a net
control and all the goodies!).

73' keep in touch by all modes of communication, especially radio....that's
why we are HAM's.

Ask a HAM, he will tell you WATTS what!

Regards,

Jim Tetlow

Jim, back in 1954 when I first got my novice license I built a small AT-1
Heathkit (great fun smelling up the resin smoke). I have no idea what
happened to it in the meantime.

I am working though the manual for the Yaesu. Notes at the back are helpful.
Wow, as you say it ain't for novices, it does everything except fry eggs.
It worked well on 2 meters, though. Thursday I spent some time re-securing
the antenna from the trees to the pole behind the office. Gave some more
slack to the ladder feed so it hangs more vertically.

I will call for help when I reach a deadend. Thanks for the offer.

Peter

Thanks Wayne that's a welcome story. I'm sure they would do very well
indeed.
