Subject: From CALV EC: Cyclist Event Oct 22 - Action Required
TO: CALV ARES STATIONS
DATE: October 2, 2011
We have a request to help a charity cycle event on October 22 at Herrington
Harbor South. Monies being raised are for Cystic Fibrosis research and
care.
The event would start at 8 am and continue through approximately noon. When
done the volunteers and cyclist will meet at the celebratory lunch back at
Herrington Harbor South.
I wrote back the organizer asking for more details about the course and if
they need additional resources from us like a vehicle on course looking for
cyclist needing the repair vehicle or monitor the last cyclist on the
course. Hope to know more information by tomorrow's night's Net.
If you would please let me know if you can participate or let NCS on
CARA/ARSE Net tomorrow know. This way we have some idea how many hams we
have to help with this this task.
For everyone's general knowledge, these cyclist events are the best practice
for an emergency communication exercise. We work them in Simplex mode,
spreading out stations so we can pass tactical messages to the various Rest
Stops and Organizer.
They are a lot of fun to do.

Also, during the daytime hours of Tuesday, October 18, there is a CALVEX
DRILL. Since we have a radio at the EOC that functions now, the RO/Les/N3YR
may need one or two hams to help with this exercise. If so, he will ask
soon.
And that's not all.
I will be meeting with PGRE RO, Jim Montgomery/WB3KAS in two weeks. There
is a Hospital Exercise for Region V (STMA, CHAS, CALV, PGRE and MONT) on
Wednesday, October 19 > that is the day after CALVEX DRILL. All hospitals
of Region V are participating in this exercise including Calvert Memorial
Hospital. However, CMH is the only one that is NOT utilizing amateur radio.
There is a long story why CMH is not using amateur radio as their backup
communications which is more their doings than ours. Jim/KB3WAS and his
wife. Wanda/KA3AHI, are very good getting hospitals linked up with amateur
radios. PRGE has five hospitals, an urgent care and Kaiser-Permanente using
amateur radio as backup communication in Prince George's County. There are
other reasons we are meeting such as planning better coordination between
the two counties. I know that Jim and his wife will try to get us to set up
for the Hospital Exercise but I will do my best to resist for this one time.
I am mentioning these two events so everyone has pre-knowledge of events
happening soon and can plan accordingly. Keeping us all informed. As you
see, there are a lot of amateur radio events we can help with, especially in
the Spring and Fall.
