TO: ALL CALV ARES STATIONS
DATE: August 1, 2011
Since June 1 we have been in hurricane season. CALV ARES & RACES
activations for hurricanes occur mostly in August-September timeframe. We
have been fortunate that for many years no activation of ARES & RACES has
occurred. That does not mean we should placid in our duty and just hope
this year will be uneventful again.
Attached to this Email is the Hurricane Isabel After Action Report.
Hurricane Isabel occurred in 2003 and it was a major weather event in CALV.
We manned three shelters, American Red Cross office and the EOC. It was an
ALL HANDS on DECK event and we did not have that many hands. Somehow we did
it and were successful communicators for the County's RACES activation.
Please read the attached report and be prepared to ask the CALV ARES
leadership questions on our weekly CARA/ARES Net held at 7:00PM (L) every
Monday on the K3CAL repeater.
We have a CARA/ARES meeting this Thursday, however, there is not enough time
allotted for discussion on this topic. There will be an ARRL Official
Observer, OO, at the meeting to give our group and insight on the role of an
OO. We really hope you make plans to attend this CARA General Meeting
located at the County Services Plaza Building starting at 7:30PM (L).
In the meantime, start planning making your to-go kits and testing your
equipment on the weekly Net. Do not just check into on the Net, plan to use
this opportunity to check your various radios, antennas and other
combinations of equipment while on the Net. These Nets are excellent time
to test your equipment. Now is the time to start being prepared for the
unexpected?
