I've owned my 545 for about a year now, and have been very pleased
with it. I find the audio acceptable, although my previous receiver
was an Icom R71A, so perhaps I am just used to poor audio ;-)
I primarily use it for utility monitoring, also some pirate listening
on the side, almost never for SWBC listening. I find the filtering to
be excellent (and I have the Collins Mechanical filters in my R71A).
I have started to run some tests on the 545 to see what it is
actually doing, documenting my results on the web. It's a work in
progress, and only just started, but I have some results of filtering
tests available here: http://www.blackcatsystems.com/NRD545/
I'd appreciate any comments, including whether my technique of just
looking at noise (no signal present) is even acceptable for looking
at the audio/filtering characteristics.
Next I want to look into the whole issue of whether or not the 3rd IF
filtering is sufficient or not.
