In looking through the original FCDA specifications (for CD
certification), no color for equipment was specified. Most, if not all,
were circuit and mechanical/physical requirements to be met. From what I
recall from a conversation with a Gonset manager back in the 90's, the
orange/yellow color on the Gonset Communicators that were offered as "CD
compliant", was defined by Faust Gonsett. Back in the day, some Geiger
Counters were also painted a similar color.
The EF Johnson Viking II CDC brocedure and specification blurb defined a
number of circuit and physical changes to be "CD compliant", but there
was nothing in the spec that indicated the cabinet had to painted a
different color. They did affix a "CD label" to the front panel as part
of its complacency identification. Not many Johnson amateur equipment
models were defined as "CD compliant".
However, many years ago at a hamfest, I saw a Viking II painted blue and
had rub on Datak labels on it. Owner said he painted it blue to match the
blue color of his National NC-190.
