[Johnson] Looking for resources and possibly some help . . .

Donald,
Sounds like you might have found a good bargain.
Probably everyone has a certain method of preliminary testing
of a xmtr/rcvr of unknown condition. Here are some cks I
would do....not necessarily in this order. I guess now you
have fired it up and found no RF output. First, and you may
be doing this.....I would use a stout variac and/or a series
incandescent lamp (75w/100w)...put in a socket so you can
change lamps. This will protect the gear and variac from shorts
in the equipment. Take a look around the wiring looking for
obvious signs of shorts, burnt resistors, overheated caps,
etc. If kit built, look for bad or loose solder joints. You
might also pull all tubes and start at the pwr supply cking
for AC from the P/T. If you have proper P/T voltages plug in
the rectifier/s and see if you have B+ and other DC/bias voltages.
Watch for shorts on the P/S output side...shorted lytics. And just
go forward with the tube replacement being sure you have fil & other
voltages. Oh, is there a shorting strap on the acc. socket on the rear
apron ....can't remember. Also make sure fuses are proper value. Add a
polarized ac cord. You are right abt the voltage/resistance cks
...that's a must do. And of course ck or swap the tubes if
needed. Info on values should be in the manual. As you know there
are lethal voltages lurking in the ole Ranger...be careful. There
are numerous other cks you can make as you go along. GL and hope
the problems are simple.

Subject: [Johnson] Looking for resources and possibly some help . . .

I'm new to the list so I don't have the benefit of past posts to
search through.

I just bought a Johnson Ranger (I) at the Hamvention yesterday from an
estate sale. I made some quick checks into a dummy load and can't get
any output power indication, but I'm not surprised.

I plan to re-cap it and check resistors and voltages. I do have the
manual in PDF, and found another manual from the BAMA mirror site that
has better and more pictures added to it. I plan to print the
schematic on 11 x 17 paper to see it better.

My first step, though, will be to find the problem(s) it currently has
and fix them.

I am looking for resources that some of you may be aware of that might
help me on my way to getting this rig in perfect working order.

My total investment so far is only $50, so if I find something that
would be an expensive repair, making it not worth fixing, I can look
for another one of these and use this one for parts.

So, where should I start as far as getting to resources that might be
useful in fixing this old Ranger transmitter?

Thanks!!!

Donald
