Back some years ago I converted one that didn't have a 4D32 in it (empty) to use
an 829B. They were much cheaper @ abt $4 nib. The only issue I remember was
that you have to be sure that you have grid drive B4 flipping the plate switch. If not
it vaporizes the screen grid in the 829. There is a 3E29 that is rated for radar use
that should be a bit more rugged. Would make abt 85 wts on AM.

Subject: [Johnson] New to me Johnson Viking I

All,

Well, I guess I am addicted. I haven't even gotten started
working on the Johnson Viking II I picked up a few weeks ago, and I went a
picked up a Viking I this past weekend. It's in pretty good shape. The face
is panel is in much nicer condition than the V2 I l already have. Judging
from the serial number (260) it was made in 1950. It does not have the TVI
kit, and has had the 4D32 final replaced with the 829B. WHen I finally get
around to working on it, I would like to install the TVI mods, and convert
it back to the 4D32 tube.

Does anyone have any pictures of a v1 with the tvi mods. I have located the
original instructions for the factory tvi mod, but it does not have any
pictures. I imagine it has some screening, possibly some panels, and a cover
for the meter along with some sort of mod to the tuning window. Not really
necessary to install it, but figured it would be better to have than not.

Anyway, thanks for being here and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

MItch KJ7JA
