Well,
First of all I took the panels to a copy place that had a big enough
scanner. My scanner was too small. I then took the scanned object and
worked with it in my CS4 graphics program. I am able to blow up the
scanned work on a letter by letter and dot by dot basis if needed. The
most time consuming issue of it all is finding the right fonts, or fonts
that are so close enough that it would be nearly impossible to tell. I
spent hours looking at fonts. Probably looked at a thousand of them
before being satisfied with what I have. The program one would use has
to do Vector images to insure the fonts and general design is dark
enough and opaque for making the screens. Just an ordinary graphic
design program wont work unless it does Vector imaging. This particular
radio only has one color, black, so color wasnt an issue. But, a screen
had to be done for the face plate, and the escutcheon dial plate also.
When you have more than one color, a screen needs to be made for each
color. Like a Viking Valiant for instance. I did have to do a bit of
hand work to freshen the Viking a bit, but it turned out well I think.
The silk screen process is a beast all its own. You can look up how to
do screens on the internet so I wont go into that process. All of it is
time consuming up front, but after the screens are done, they can be
reused time and again. I eventually want to be able to to screens for
all of the Johnson equipment. I have some Hammarlund radios as well and
if time permits, I will do screens for them as well. Hope this answers
your questions.

I made a silk screen and this would be the first attempt at something like this. I now have the screens and am able to do more face plates. I matched the colors using Sherwin Williams auto paints. Painted, sanded and buffed by hand too get the patina that I felt was right for the era of the radio. I am enclosing a link to my web page for viewing. My next attempt is going to be a Johnson Courier Amplifier that I just picked up. You can click on the link after getting to my website to look at the pictures of my purchase and view the "before" pics of it. I will look to get this done in the next month or so and will post that when I am done as well if anyone is interested. I will have a screen for this radio as well when I am done. Please enjoy.
