I've done several radios over the years and used 0.125 Delrin rod from various hobby stores.
Hobby Lobby has it now for a dollar or two for a couple of feet. Snug force fit, drop of 'super
glue' makes it permanent!

Some are .125", some are slightly smaller- Enough smaller that a .125" rod will not fit no matter how hard you try to shove it in the hole. I was going to order several different types of plastic welding rod and experiment with what the best material might be to manufacture them on a small scale, but that project got sidetracked.
> Another homebrew answer is to use those little utility marker flags that use white plastic instead of a steel wire. They are available in bundles at Menards for a couple of bucks. The material is fairly soft and easy to cut and finish after insertion.
