I will chime in momentarily. You wont find a bunch of more knowledgeable 
and nicer guys than on these threads. I can wholeheartedly attest to the 
fact that I have known nothing about fixing radios or electronics in 
general. I decided to get into boat anchors just a couple of years ago 
and every one of these same guys have guided me through every process to 
fix and repair and become much more confident and knowledgeable about 
these old radios. I cant thank them enough and it has been a great time, 
and the satisfaction after fixing the radio is beyond belief. I am in 
the middle of restoring a Valiant myself and  had a couple of issues 
with it as well. They have been fixed as a result of numerous test 
procedures and guidence by everyone on this thread, it is working great 
now. You dont need a $100.00 an hour guy to look at the radio for you. 
You will be able to figure it out. As Brian, WA5UEK has always told me, 
take your time and move slowly. If it doesnt seem right, then it 
probably isnt.Great advice that I try to follow even as impatient a 
person as I am. Look at my website and you will see the numerous radios 
I have repaired successfully with the help of all of these guys.I assure 
you, I knew nothing about electronics before meeting these guys but have 
learned an enormous amount about it in just the last couple of years. 
The craziest thing about it all is I have never met any of them face to 
face but hope to meet some as soon as it may be possible.
