[Johnson] Viking I's scarce?

Brian, the V-I had a shorter sales life span for 3 reasons.
The ARRL pretty much forced advertisers to limit the AM bandwith to around
3000Hz. The V-I was already announced at this point in CQ and held back in
QST. It took awhile to redesign the audio stages; I dont know if any
retooling was involved.
TVI had arrived shortly later. A kit was offered but it was an add on and
looked poor.
The Korean War was about to start and the USAF comandeered most of Raytheons
production of the 4D32. It helped kill the Hallicrafters HT-20 but Art
Collins bought off the generals and 32V production wasnt affected. RCA
recognized the need and released the 6146 in Jan 1952 and the V-II chassis
had only minor rework. There was even a 6146 kit available later for the V-I
altho many went with the cheap WW2 surplus 829B and the Johnson field
bulletin.
I also much prefer the V-1 looks and the darn near bulletproof 4D32...I
tried my darndest to blow the tube with the one I had in 57-59 and have
another now. In fact it was the poor results I had with a DX-100 that drove
me to the used V-I. Of course I knew nothing about screen current and what
often happens when loading into seriously mismatched antennas. The V-I didnt
care.
