Your suspicions are likely correct.

Use extreme care when you find it necessary to remove the front panel to 
access the vernier drive. The flexible coupling's thin micarta insulation 
material will have become very brittle and is therefore very easily broken. 
A replacement coupling is hard to find because one side is 1/4" dia. and the 
other is 3/16 diameter.

I was able to repair one once by drilling out the rivet and using #2-56 
screws/nuts to secure a replacement insulator made from some very thin 
plastic sheet. Not really fun.
